[NEWS] 120508 B.A.P, Grabbed the teen fandom..fanclub has a 7-fold increase since debut
Six-member rookie group B.A.P is sweeping up the teen fandom with frightening momentum. B.A.P is the first male idol group of TS Entertainment, where Secret and Untouchable are signed. In a market dominated by pretty flower boys, they enforced an image that emanated masculinity, and targeted female teen fans by using hip hop instead of the recent trend of electronic music, driving their degree of success. On (May) 6th, about 500 fans gathered to cheer B.A.P on during the set of SBS k-pop chart program ‘Inkigayo,’ They cheered in unison blowing a whistle to their new song ‘Power.’ In their fourth month since debut, B.A.P’s early momentum is unusual. Thanks to their rebellious image and strong messages in their music and fashion, they are differentiated from the current idol trend, and through this strategy, their number of fans has also grown. Agency TS Entertainment said on (May) 8th, “During their debut in the beginning of the year, the official fanclub had 5000 members but now it’s grown to 37,000 members. They are gaining a lot of popularity with teen fans. Whereas most idol groups target noona (T/N older female) fans, B.A.P strategized to target their own age group: teens. They are also equipped with a trendy image following the footsteps of H.O.T, who teens were crazy about.” Their debut showcase gathered about 3000 people and their strong performace even collapsed their first stage; B.A.P is a group whose music, fashion, character, etc are varied yet precisely calculated. The most representative out of those is the whistle cheering. The whistles, whose sounds can be heard along with the cheers of fans as soon as B.A.P’s performance starts, were inspired by the vuvuzelas from the World Cup. The whistle was added to their music due to the fact that although the cheering vuvuzelas of a soccer game may seem loud, they excite those who hear it. They used the mob mentality that makes people follow each other. The number of fans who blow the whistles as their cheer on B.A.P during their performances has also increased. B.A.P is actively promoting their second single ‘Power.’
